It is still overcast this morning and short showers coming through as we head out along the highway again. Frogs are still singing their love songs. Lots of grassy fields with stands of trees dotted about to provide shelter for the herds of dairy cattle and flocks of sheep that we pass. They certainly have plenty to eat. The countryside looks quite inviting.
Driving towards Bairnsdale we pass through kilometres of burnt out forest. We even saw a log that was still smouldering so the fires were not so long ago. From the look of the trees the fire had been fierce as it passed through.
We leave the Princes Highway at Sale and travel along the South Gippsland Highway. The wind is quite strong and at one place after having a car coming towards us flash his lights, we come across an old tree that has fallen across our lane of traffic thus reducing the flow to one lane. We return the favour via CB and advise a timber truck coming towards us of the blockage ahead. As it was in a 100kph zone the chance of an accident happening was real. A nearby resident had parked his car on the road with it’s hazard lights flashing to help with the warning.
Yarram provided a Woolies supermarket (just wanted a loaf of bread for lunch) however I found a bakery in front of the supermarket so a hot pie and sausage roll seemed more appropriate than a salad sandwich on a rather cool day. Bought the loaf of bread I went for originally so what was the problem? Snuggled in our van we enjoyed our hot lunch and coffee (that finished the thermos) and then it was on for the final leg of the day to Toora where we have checked in for the night. Free wireless internet, alpaca and cow to visit outside the back gate, horse and bull in paddock next door again a perfect setting. The showers are persisting and the wind is still blustery and quite cool so maybe this is preparation for Tasmania.
