Wednesday 9th March 2011

What a magic day weather wise.  Clear skies and sunshine with a slight breeze.  We set out to head down the highway towards Hobart but stopping at the north side of the river at Bridgewater and finally being able to refill with gas.  Lovely suburb along the river where we enjoyed lunch at a bakery/coffee shop before setting off to drive west along the Derwent River towards Boyer and driving up to Pulpit Rock Lookout which gave great views of the river and New Norfolk.  This is an area where we intend to return with the van and have as a base whilst we explore Hobart and surrounding areas.

We headed out through the Derwent valley on the Lyell Highway towards Hamilton and even stopped and ate a fill of blackberries.  They were everywhere.  Neither of us had done this since being children as blackberries are poisoned back in NSW and Qld.  I had forgotten how prickly the vines were but that didn’t stop us from enjoying ourselves.  I collected some as I would like to see what happens when it comes to dyeing wool with the colour from the berries.  If the stains on our fingers are anything to go by it should be interesting.  From Hamilton we cut back across towards Bothwell and the countryside through this area is again dry and brown looking.  The dams on the properties seem to be at a low level and the area looks as though it needs a few good downpours.
